[*NOTE: For the colors to work properly when you open a new document, under the new document profile drop-down box, choose web]. Start by using the rectangle tool to make a black background. After you create the background, press Ctrl (command) + 3 to hide it. Then press ctrl (command) + ” to bring up the grid; if your grid doesn’t look like mine, go to Edit > Preferences > Guides and Grids and match my settings.
Then press shift + ctrl (command) + “ to snap to grid. And using the pen tool, click and hold on an intersection and drag up to the next intersection. Then about 12 squares to the left click and drag down 8 squares (or to the next bolded line). Then click two intersections down from your start point. Now click and drag starting 12 squares to the right of your starting point and ending 8 up. Almost done, click back at your starting point and drag down 8 squares. Now it may look like you’ve messed this up but we’ll fix that. Hold Alt (option) and click and drag the bottom handle up to the top one.
Now that we have a nice heart shape lets turn off the grid and grid settings by pressing Shift + Ctrl (command) + “ then Ctrl (command) + “. Now with your heart selected press Ctrl (command) + C to copy, then Ctrl (command) + F to past in front. With the selection tool, hold shift and alt (option) and drag a corner of the heart in to make the second heart smaller. Do this again with the smaller heart to have something like this.
Now select all of the hearts nd change the fill color to white and the stroke color to none (it dissapeared!? Just press Alt [option] + Ctrl [command] + 3 and now your background is back! Press Ctrl (command) + 2 to lock it so it doesn’t get in the way). Now you can do this next step two different ways, the first is to select the blend tool
and with all the shapes selected click the same anchor point on each individual shape.
OR, with all of the shapes selected press Alt (option) + Ctrl (command) + B to make a blend. Using the direct selection tool select the center shape and set the transparency to 0 using the transparency panel. Select the middle shape and set it’s transparency to 5. Now select the outer shape, and set its transparency to 50.
Doesn’t quite look right, select the shape and go to Object > Expand, click Ok. Press Alt (option) + Ctrl (command) + B once more to make it look smoother. Kind of looks like a bubble now right?
Let us add some gloss effects. Using the pen tool draw a “glare” shape in the upper left region of the heart, and another in the upper left corner of the right side.
Select both of the glares and in the transparency panel set the mode to overlay.
Now select the Blob Brush Tool
and using a decent sized brush (to resize use the bracket keys “[ , ]”) paint a blob in across the heart, this will be the reflection coming off of the bubble.
In the transparency panel also set the opacity to 10. And go to Effect > Stylize > feather; set the radius to 15; click ok.
One final step, using the ellipse tool draw a couple circles in the upper right corner of the heart and set the opacity in the transparency panel to 15. Now select all of the objects and press Ctrl (command) + G to group everything together.
Now you have a bubble heart! You can even change the colors and everything!
